Reading the numbers
Across the 8 model years of the Chevrolet Avalanche in this data, 2010 draws comparatively few complaints; 2002 is the outlier year.
Filings have fallen off, 24 in the last three years against 61 in the three before. That is normal as a generation leaves the road.
The median odometer reading at the time of complaint was 62,115 miles.
In owners' own words
Dashboard containing passenger side is severely cracked. In the event of an airbag deployment, dashboard may prevent proper operation of airbag or may shatter resulting in parts of the dashboard being projectiles towards the occupants of the vehicle. Gm dealer cost to replace dashboard is prohibitive. The dashboards should be replaced with new style that gm dealer claims no longer cracks or the airbag disabled. Air bags
Cracked upper end of dash board. Three separate cracks appeared on the upper part of the dash, one is going right across where the passenger air bag is located. This happened for no apparent reason. The vehicle had about 89000 miles on it when I first observed the issue. It rattles like crazy while driving on city roads and it is probably a mojor safety issue in the event of a air bag deployment. Air bags · reported at 89,000 miles
The dashboard has cracked in 2 locations. The 1st runs into the corner of the passenger airbag compartment. The 2nd is over the instrument cluster and now I have a check engine light on. Not sure yet of the 2 are related. The first crack just seemed to appear. The 2nd crack (which is much worse now) I could hear it crack when I started the engine sitting still.
