Reading the numbers
Across the 8 model years of the GMC Sierra 2500 in this data, 2004 ranks 2nd by complaint volume — 2003 draws the most.
Filings have fallen off, 8 in the last three years against 20 in the three before. That is normal as a generation leaves the road.
The median odometer reading at the time of complaint was 60,000 miles.
In owners' own words
Failure of speedometer and oil gauge. Was contacted by gm to replace the instrument panel. Because I had more than 70k miles they said it will not be replaced. Even though they admit to a failure of the system, since I cannot prove it happened within the 70k mileage they are refusing to replace it. This is a tremendous hazard and is very costly to replace. A dealer quoted me $850. Thanks for your help. Electrical system · reported at 48,000 miles
Speedometer shows incorrect readings. At times it will show over 100mph while at normal highway speeds. Other times it will read around 60 while driving at least 80 -90 (from rate of passing other drivers on highway). This is a very dangerous situation. Apparently gm will repair at no cost but only if less than 70k miles. This vehicle began to show problem around 74k miles. Electrical system · reported at 74,000 miles
Tachometer gauge rides all over, had transmission checked, okay. Had a scan done, no engine or transmission codes, overdrive does not release when tachometer gauge is erratic, on scan, rpm is normal at about 700, while tachometer shows apprximately 3750 rpm.Being told by chevrolet dealer perhaps a dashboard cluster panel. About $400.00. This truck only has 48,000 miles on it. Electrical system
