Reading the numbers

Across the 25 model years of the Volkswagen Jetta in this data, 2000 sits 10th by complaint volume. 2009 draws the most.

Filings have fallen off, 6 in the last three years against 10 in the three before. That is normal as a generation leaves the road.

The median odometer reading at the time of complaint was 55,000 miles.

In owners' own words

Vehicle was purchased new in 2000. Vehicle ran low on oil at 1500 miles. Filed complaint about excessive oil consumption for a new vehicle. Vehicle now has 66,000 miles and burns one quart of oil every 1000 miles. This has happened from the day of purchase. Mechanic has stated that this is within specs, but may damage pollution control systems. I find numerous complaints on-line regarding this issue. Engine and engine cooling · reported at 1,500 miles
My 2000 Jetta ran dry on oil at 21,000 miles but not under 2yr bumper to bumper warranty (6k miles after a factory oil change). They did a consumption test for 1500 miles and assured us everything was ok. It was ok for 1500 miles then it was empty again. They had to change the piston rings and pretended that this was a unique problem for our car. I have since read other reports of similar experiences. Engine and engine cooling · reported at 20,953 miles
My 2000 Jetta has began burning oil at a rate of 3/4 qt to 1 1/4 qt per 1000 miles. The dealer and Volkswagen state this is normal by their standards and they just continue to do oil consumption tests and tell us to come back. Why has there not been a recall. I have found numerous other similar complaints on the internet and I have never experienced this with any other new care that I have owned. Engine and engine cooling
