Reading the numbers
Across the 6 model years of the BMW 528I in this data, 2015 draws comparatively few complaints; 2008 is the outlier year.
Filings are rising — 88 in the last three years against 6 in the three before. For a vehicle this age that usually points to a wear-related failure owners are hitting now.
The median odometer reading at the time of complaint was 80,000 miles.
In owners' own words
My vehicle has had an open recall for the engine coolant system and the manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall for your vehicle in a timely manner. As a result, the engine coolant system became damaged and my vehicle is no longer operable. This is my only means of transportation and is causing a serious hardship. I would like the manufacturer to offer an immediate solution. Engine
The car shut down by itself while driving. It went from 30 miles/hour to complete stop in 20 feet. I could not put the car in neutral. Any attempts to restart the engine caused smoke to come out of the hood. I had the car towed to the dealer/service. Service told me the engine had seized and they will have to replace the engine which would cost me $26, 000. Engine
Driver side front door handle/actuator freezes in cold weather. Door will not open from inside or outside. This is a safety issue as it could trap a person inside. This seems to be a problem with the cables that connect the handles to the mechanism itself, not the actual door latch as it can be moved with fingers when the mechanism is frozen. Unknown or other
