The transmission in this vehicle is defective. Their should be a recall on this model which is a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The problem is costing all of fords customers alot of money average cost is 2600 dollars. They know about this problem and will not help even with some of the repair cost. Transmission slipped between 2nd and 3rd gears,and between 3rd and 4th. Rpm raced high. Od light would flash, check engine light came on. Rpm's would race high, but the vehicle would not move, then suddenly catch. Transmission had to be rebuilt with only 56k miles. Two weeks in the shop, $600. Repair bill.
