2000 Mercury Sable, 62,900 miles, mechanic found that a rear coil spring was broken and recommended that I replace both springs and strut assemblies. He stated that it was a safety issue since the spring could puncture the tire. Repair completed at a cost of $912.00, Ford only covers the front springs, but many people have complained to ford that the rear springs are failing as well causing safety concerns. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the entire suspension was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Noise in rear, worse when turning right and braking. Problem was identified to be broken rear coil springs and they were replaced. It appears under investigation # peo5054 that a number complaints have been reported with this same problem on the 2000 Mercury sables.
