Reading the numbers
Across the 6 model years of the Chevrolet Volt in this data, 2013 ranks 2nd by complaint volume — 2017 draws the most.
Filings have fallen off, 38 in the last three years against 100 in the three before. That is normal as a generation leaves the road.
The median odometer reading at the time of complaint was 66,000 miles.
In owners' own words
At 40,000 miles approximately, the check airbag sensor light came up. The dealer said that because it was out of the 36,000 mile warranty, it was not covered and it would be about $850 and there would be no guarantee that the sensor change would fix it. I refused the work for that price. I have driven another 135,000 miles and it is still on. Safety has been reduced due to the high charge for a manufacturing defect. Air bags
Service air bag warning comes on often when there is a passenger in the car. Will beep and come back on every time the pasenger moves. Even with no passenger it will sometimes come on. When it does come on, the air bag display will switch to off. This happens whether stationary or moving and on any type of road. This has been going on for a long time due to the extremely expensive fix of the passenger seat sensor. Air bags · reported at 110,000 miles
The passenger side airbag sensor is failing. The car is not that old. We have had no spills in the car. But the airbag sensor is coming on. We paid the dealer $180 to look at it, but they found nothing wrong. Now the sensor light is coming on every time we start the car. It is out of warranty, and fixing will cost up to $1500. That is crazy. Many other people have had this problem with their chevy volts. Air bags · reported at 68,000 miles
